Northern California Pacific Coast water temperature is almost always in the range of 50s-60s degree Fahrenheit, and the breeze is almost always chilly all year. A few weeks ago, we decided to go to the beach because it was a warm day. From where we live, we are about 2-3 hours drive to the nearest beach, and it could be longer with the Bay Area Traffic.

We didn’t want to rush coming home in the evening so we decided to book a 1 night stay at Embassy Suites in San Rafael, Marin County and go to the beach near there. We chose Marin County beach because we’ve never been to the area.

We decided to head to the hotel in the late afternoon and arrived just in time for the evening reception which is complimentary at the Embassy Suites. We were with my sister Catherine’s family. Our families usually travel together because our children are about the same age and its just more fun for the children to be together.

We were so impressed with our 1 night stay at Embassy Suites San Rafael that we decided to go back 2 weeks later, for 2 nights stay on a Father’s Day Weekend, and this time with more family and friends. We went back because we needed to be in Napa for our nephew’s college graduation ceremony, visited Point Reyes Lighthouse and went to 2 other Northern California beaches.

Embassy Suites San Rafael is an upscale hotel chain by Hilton. It is in Marin county, located about 17 miles North from San Francisco’s famous Golden Gate Bridge. It is less than 2 hours drive to Sonoma and Napa Wine Country, Sonoma Raceway, Muir Woods,Point Reyes Lighthouse, downtown San Francisco,Northgate Shopping Mall and a number of beautiful Northern California Beaches like Baker Beach, Stinson Beach, Muir Beach, Dillon Beach and near Tomales and Bodega Bays.

Charlene at the front desk was very patient and very helpful in assisting with our lost reservation.

We love hanging out in the beautiful and relaxing tropical atrium which has several sitting area with tables and chairs, a bridge and a waterfall.

There is also a beautiful Koi pond that children and adults alike enjoy.

And after a long day exploring the nearby beach and other attractions, it is so nice to enjoy the Complimentary Manager’s Evening Reception that is available everyday 5:30 to 7:30 pm.They serve light snacks like chips and salsa, cheese and crackers, fresh vegetable platter and dips and meatballs. They also have the all time favorite popcorn. You can order sodas, juices, house wine, select draft beers, spirits, cocktails and mocktails.

This hotel is great for families because all guest rooms are all suite. A bedroom with a choice of a king or 2 queen beds, with a work desk and ergonomic chair, a big TV, dressers and cabinet, bedside table and an alarm clock. Most of the rooms have a window with a view of the atrium.

The separate living room has a sofa bed, 2nd TV, an arm chair, a small dining area, a microwave, a small refrigerator and a coffee maker. The premium rooms have a a Keurig® coffee brewer, docking station, complimentary wifi and access to refreshment area  for some drinks and snacks.

Another Embassy Suites feature that we love is the complimentary cooked – to – order breakfast. Breakfast hours on Mondays to Fridays is 6:30 to 9:30am, and on Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays is 7am to 10 am. You can create your own custom omelettes, scrambled eggs or egg whites.

You can also have hot pancakes or french toast. There is a breakfast buffet with bacon and sausage, breakfast potatoes and eggs, pastries. There is a toast station, fruit and yogurt and cereal station, hot drinks station for coffee, tea and hot chocolate, and a separate juice and milk station too.

We enjoyed every breakfast we had at Embassy Suites. And we love the friendly atmosphere. The dining area is large and with plenty of tables and chairs.

Grill 101 is the restaurant inside Embassy Suites San Rafael. They offer fresh California cuisine and classic American dishes and the ingredients are sourced locally. I can not say anything about this restaurant because we did not eat there at all. Maybe in the future visits we would try their food.

What I discovered though that I am really liking is that they have a Guest Coin Laundry Room in the 4th Floor of the Hotel. This is very convenient for a family with longer stays or if you have wet clothes and towels after a beach escapade.I believe its $2 per load.

There is a spa and indoor heated pool which is big and warm enough for the kids to swim in, and  is open until 10pm for children. I was told at the front desk that adults can swim late into the night. There were enough towels for everyone. You have to watch your kids swimming though because they don’t have lifeguards on duty.

They also have a fitness center that offers cardio and weights. They also have a business center that is open 24 hours with internet and printing access. Embassy Suites San Rafael also has a ballroom that can accommodate up to 500 guests. There is plenty of parking and self park is $7 per night. There is no valet parking offered at this hotel.

The Hallway to the Ballroom

Our stay at Embassy Suites San Rafael was quick and easy. Apart from the checking in problem we had when our booking was “lost” in the system and with which Charlene at the front desk worked on patiently, we really did not have any issue.I did not hear any issue also from the rest of our companions (there were 6 families total).

The bedroom suites were spacious and clean, we had enough towels and we were provided toothbrushes and toothpastes (I forgot my toiletries at home) and extra shampoos and conditioners. We were out most of the daytime and only went up to our rooms when its time to settle in for the night. The beds are firm enough for me (I like firm beds), but the pillows are too soft and does not give enough neck support (like most pillows in most hotels). The sofa bed also has enough cushion and support. We did not hear any complaints from the kids.

The complimentary wifi was fast enough, again there were no complaints from the kids and the 2 TV (1 in the bedroom and 1 in the separate living room) is a win for the children.

The food and drinks for both evening reception and breakfast were excellent, not just because its complimentary, but it actually tasted good. I do feel sorry for the 2 people manning the hot grill because there were a lot of guests who wanted made to order omelettes and pancakes and french toasts.Their servers were quick to refill the fruit stations and the buffet stations. And if any member of your party can’t go down to breakfast, you can take a breakfast tray up to your room also,no extra charge.

We did not have a lot of interaction with the hotel staff but to the few that we did bumped into, they were friendly and helpful.

Price: Since this hotel is by Hilton, you can use Hilton Honors points or discount. I noticed that the price range is $150s to $280s, depending on the type of room you want. They have the standard 2 room suites ( king or 2 queen beds), they have premium rooms, executive rooms and the biggest room I noticed is the 3 room hospitality suite with 2 king beds ( one for each bedroom) and a sofa bed in the living room.

Summary

My family love Embassy Suites San Rafael and we will be proud to recommend it to anyone, specially to a family with children for its convenience because of the main features I mentioned above. Embassy Suites San Rafael is the best mid-range hotel there is in the area.
